Handy DIY Plumbing Tips For The Homeowner

Posted on January 1, 2018November 14, 2019

If you are having issues with your plumbing, you want to make sure that you are taking care of the problem in the best way possible. Sometimes, all it takes to fix a plumbing problem is a bit of information, and this article has that in spades.

If your pipes are making a racket, there is a simple way to quiet them down. Exposed pipes need to be properly anchored. You might want to contact a professional when the pipes are hard to access.

To avoid frozen pipes in your home, never allow the temperature in your house to drop below freezing and insulate any pipes that are exposed to the elements. Obviously, if it is below freezing outdoors, the pipes will be subjected to the same temperatures. In the best situation, it can take hours for frozen pipes to thaw and water to run freely again. However, they could burst, which would cause a huge mess and an extremely big repair bill.

Avoid paying the plumber until he finishes the job. It is customary to put down one-third to one-half of the total cost before the work is started, but do not pay in full until it is complete. This ensures that the plumber fully completes the job before getting paid.

Do not use harsh chemicals to clean or treat your toilet. These things may help improve smells, but they can damage the rubber components of a toiler, which can cause it to function improperly or even worse, completely break down.

Check the floors in your bathroom for any give in order to be sure that there is no damage in the floors. Sit reversed on the toilet (facing the tank) with your feet on the floor. Rock your weight onto each foot in turn and see if you can feel any weakness or “give” in the floor. It could potentially save money by discovering any problems before too much damage occurs.

You should put a strainer over your drains to catch anything that could clog your drain up. Clean the kitchen sink strainer any time something collects in it. Those in the bathtub should be cleaned out periodically, as needed.

To keep your garbage disposal lasting for a long time, make sure you clean it on a daily basis. By regularly incorporating a routine using a combination of dish soap, lemon rinds, and even cherry pits, you can keep your disposal running smoothly and smelling as fresh as the day it was installed.

It is important to always run cold water while using your garbage disposal. The cold water helps the blades that are inside stay sharp, and will keep your disposal running smoothly. Don’t use hot water while running the garbage disposal. Hot water converts the grease in your trash to liquid form. When the liquified grease goes down the drain, it clogs the pipes.

The next time you prepare to take on plumbing issues, give these tips a once over first. You want to take care of plumbing issues the right way in order to protect yourself financially. Think about this advice carefully.
